Understanding Funding

Bad credit and legal funding: why your score does not matter

This is one of the few financial products where your credit history is irrelevant. Here is the reason that is actually true and not a marketing line.

When people hear they can get money against a pending case, the next question is usually nervous. They assume there is a catch involving their credit. There is not, and the reason is structural, not generous.

Why credit is irrelevant here

A lender checks your credit because they are betting on you paying them back from your future income. Your history predicts that. Legal funding is not that bet. The funder is betting on your case, and repayment comes out of the settlement, not your paycheck. Your past borrowing behavior tells the funder nothing useful about whether your car accident case will win. So they do not look at it.

This is not a loophole or a promotion. It falls directly out of how non-recourse funding works. We have a whole piece on why funding is not a loan if you want the deeper version.

What they look at instead

The case. How clear is fault. How serious and well documented are the injuries. How much insurance is available. How experienced is your attorney. A person with a 500 credit score and a strong rear-end injury case is in a better funding position than someone with excellent credit and a weak, contested claim. The case is the whole thing.

No income check either

The same logic extends to employment. You do not need a job, a pay stub, or a tax return. Many of the people who need funding most cannot work because of their injuries. A product that required proof of income would be useless to exactly the people it is meant for. That would not make sense, so it does not work that way.

No payments while you wait

One more thing that follows from all this. There are no monthly payments to miss, so there is nothing that could damage your credit even if you wanted it to. Funding does not get reported to credit bureaus. It sits entirely outside that system. The how it works page walks through the full process if you want to see it end to end.

Worried your credit will get in the way?

It will not. We underwrite the case, not your score. Apply and find out where you stand.
